Spring Fever – Sausage Sizzle

7 for 7.30 pm

We thought it would make it more fun if we give a prize to the best dressed person so let’s see who can come up with the best “Spring” costume.

Everyone to dress accordingly and to bring sausages to braai (no other meat please). We will supply onions, bread and sauces. Come and join us for a social evening to celebrate Spring, share experiences from hikes and generally enjoy ourselves. Drinks will be available to purchase as always.

DAY HIKE – September

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Date: Sunday 25 September

Venue: Van Gaalen Cheese Farm at Hekpoort

Cost: Members: R30.00, non-members R35.00 (Please try to have the correct money, it saves a lot of time)

Start time: 08:00 sharp (Please be there by 07.30)
Pay at the start of the hike.
Earlier this year we did the river hike.  This time we are going up the mountain, which is quite a steep walk and it will probably be hot because the morning sun will be beating on us, so take plenty of water, sunscreen and hat.  Please also take a light lunch or snack to enjoy at the top.  The plan is to go to the restaurant for coffee and a slice of their delicious cheesecake when we come back down.
We would like to start hiking as soon after 8 a.m. as possible, so please be there by 7.30.  Ioan will collect the money from you at the venue and pay as early as possible so that we can get going.
Directions.
1. From West Rand, take the R563 to Hekpoort.  Turn RIGHT at the T-junction and travel along R560 to Skeerpoort.  Just after Skeerpoort, the farm is on your LEFT.
2. From the Randburg side, take R512 past Lanseria and follow the R512 until you cross the bridge over the Hartebeespoort Dam.  At the T-junction, turn LEFT, pass Magalies Park and after about 5 km, the cheese farm will be on your RIGHT.
3. If you are coming from Pretoria and need directions, phone me before the date and I will help you.
Please let Joan know by Friday, 23 September if you are coming so that she can have an idea of whom to expect.

DAY HIKE – August

Monday, September 5th, 2011

After an extremely warm and sunny day on Saturday, I was pleasantly surprised when Sunday dawned overcast and quite cool – ideal weather for Segwati Ranch, where there is not much shade on the hiking trails.

We were joined by three members of the (ex) Roodepoort Hiking Club and hope to see more of them in the future.  There were also other folk who joined us for the first time and, again, we hope they will come along on future hikes.  There were twenty of us in all and we stayed together as one party and all finished at pretty much the same time.

There are not really hiking trails, as such, at Segwati, but game viewing trails, mainly for 4 x 4′s.  Mountain bikers also make use of the facility and, even though we saw only three cyclists on Sunday, it did affect the game viewing, as the buck and giraffe apparently do not like the bikes and hide away.  We were lucky enough to see giraffe, zebra, a lone eland and (very close up) Nyala.  The motorbikes zinging along the Broederstroom road below the ranch on Sundays possibly also frighten the game.  Twelve Cape vultures were circling close by and after the hike, we were entertained by a pair of Crimson-breasted shrikes with their stunning red plumage.

Part of the veld had very recently burned, but Spring is most definitely here, every plant and tree is showing new signs of life.

There is a thatched lapa with tables and chairs and braai facilities and we were pleasantly surprised to find that Management had set out kettle, cups, coffee, tea, etc. for us – what a treat!  The ablutions are spotless, in fact, the entire resort is impressively well looked-after, litter free and welcoming.
