DAY HIKE

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Sunday 30 August

Venue: Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, Malcolm Road, Poortview,
             Roodepoort
Time: 08:45 to start walking at 09:00 sharp
Cost: R23 for adults and R7 for school children

Please pay your own entrance fees and meet just inside the Garden on the lawn on the right hand side. Keep your entrance receipt handy as you will need it to get out to your car later to collect your picnic goodies. We want to start walking at 09:00 so please don’t be late. We will hike the JCI Geological Trail along the ridge and then get back in time to have a picnic lunch and listen to the concert, which starts at 13:00. The magnificent big band of the South African National Ceremonial Guard, directed by Major Andrew Strugnell, will be performing. Sounds great and it would be wonderful to have a good turnout of FHAAC (in their new T-shirts!). Let Joan know if you will be coming so that we can get an idea of numbers: 083 890 4298 or e-mail jclark@telkomsa.net

HIKE : MATEKE HIKE

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

DATE:       21 – 23 AUGUST 2009

TYPE:                 BASE CAMP

AREA:       THABAZIMBI – LIMPOPO

I thought that at last I had a really good number of hikers going on a hike and this still in the relatively cold time of the year, but it was not to be. The flu took its toll on the numbers attending, but 10 still managed to go. I had 14 originally down to hike.

This was more than likely one of the best sign posted hikes I have been on, starting at Thabazimbi, it was sign posted all the way in.

We all nearly froze on the Friday night – the huts are built on “stilts,” creating the tree house effect, from timber slats and there was plenty of room between these for the wind to creep through (and for Wendy to nearly loose her contact lens through!!)

I don’t know if it is maybe the wrong time of the year to visit this area, but I found the trails a little too bland and uninteresting, but this did not deter us from still having a lovely time.

In conclusion, this would probably be a very good hike to be used as a starter for beginners, as it is not too strenuous at all.
