HIKE:              SALPETERKRANS

DATE:      24 – 26 SEPTEMBER 2009

TYPE:              BACK PACKING

AREA:      STEELPOORT

What a lovely weekend was had by all, even though I sent us off over the wrong mountain in totally the wrong direction as a start.

The owners Chris and Wilna come out to greet you and make you feel extremely welcome. The facilities are spotless; and there is everything at the base camp that one could possibly need – so this would also do very well as a base camp hike. We had a wonderfully restful time listening to the frogs down at the dam at the base camp, and the birds on the roof at the overnight hut.

As a result of the disastrous start we reached camp just before darkness set in, and although we found wood for the braai, we were not able to find any for the donkey. The trail itself is in very good condition, well marked, but we felt that where there were splits and you have markers going off in two different directions, boards need to be put up with some info. This time of the year is still very dry and this hike would be quite spectacular later into the rainy season.

The directions on how to get there are spot on as well and in conclusion a highly recommended hike.

Tuesday 29 September

Golden Reef Road Runners Club, Andrew Street, Horizon

7 for 7.30 pm

Cooking Competition

Get your thinking caps on now and come up with ideas for entering the cooking competition. The idea is to cook ingredients that you would carry on a backpacking hike. Points will be awarded for presentation and taste. Great prizes to be won. For those not entering the competition, do still join us and get to taste the entries! It is usually a fun evening and the braai fire will be lit – we will have the first bring and braai of the season so hopefully the weather will play along! Drinks available from the bar as always. (If you intend taking part in the competition, please reply to this email so that we can get an idea of numbers)

Day Hike

Sunday 27 September
Venue: Wonderboom, Pretoria
Time: 08:30 to start walking at 09:00 sharp. This is a guided walk so please DO NOT BE LATE.
Cost:  Members R40.00    Non-members R45.

We will meet at Joost Bekker Caravan Park, DF Malan Avenue in Mayville, Pretoria, from where we walk to the big tree (Wonderboom), the caves and the waterfall, back to the caravan park.  Although it is not a long or difficult hike, they estimate about 5 hours with a guide, so I suggest a picnic afterwards rather than a braai, then we won’t have to wait for the fire to be ready.

Limited to 15 people, so please book early.  First come, first served.  If I get more than 15 names, I will keep a “waiting list” to draw from in case of cancellations.  Will provide map/directions once I have names of hikers.

Book with Joan: 083 890 4298 or e-mail jclark@telkomsa.net
